Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Follow these instructions carefully to initialize your Trezor device

1

Unbox and Connect Your Trezor

Carefully unbox your Trezor device and check that all components are present. You should have:

  • Trezor hardware wallet
  • USB cable
  • Recovery seed card
  • Getting started guide

Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB cable. The device should power on automatically.

Security Check

Verify that your Trezor device arrived with intact packaging and holographic seals. If anything looks tampered with, do not proceed with setup and contact Trezor support immediately.

Device Connection
2

Install Trezor Bridge

To communicate with your Trezor device, you need to install Trezor Bridge - the communication software that enables your browser to interact with the hardware wallet.

Visit the official Trezor Bridge download page and install the version compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

After installation, restart your browser and navigate to trezor.io/start to continue the setup process.

Software Installation
3

Install Device Firmware

When you connect your Trezor for the first time, it will prompt you to install the latest firmware. This is a critical security step that ensures your device has the most up-to-date protection.

Follow the on-screen instructions in Trezor Suite to complete the firmware installation. Do not disconnect your device during this process.

Important

Never install firmware from any source other than the official Trezor website. Third-party firmware can compromise your device security.

4

Create Your Recovery Seed

The recovery seed is the most important security feature of your Trezor device. It's a list of 12, 18, or 24 words that can restore access to your cryptocurrencies if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Your Trezor will generate a unique recovery seed. Write it down on the provided recovery card in the exact order shown on the device screen.

Critical Security Advice

Never digitalize your recovery seed - no photos, no cloud storage, no typing it on any device. Store it physically in a secure location. Anyone with access to your recovery seed can access your cryptocurrencies.

Set Up Device PIN

Create a PIN code to protect your Trezor device from unauthorized physical access. The PIN is entered using the randomized number matrix on your Trezor screen to prevent keyloggers from capturing your input.

Choose a PIN that you can remember but is difficult for others to guess. You'll need this PIN every time you connect your Trezor device.

PIN Setup
6

Name Your Device and Complete Setup

Give your Trezor device a name to easily identify it if you own multiple devices. This name will appear in Trezor Suite when your device is connected.

After naming your device, the setup is complete! You can now start receiving and sending cryptocurrencies securely.

We recommend sending a small test transaction first to ensure everything is working correctly before transferring significant amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Trezor device setup

What if I lose my recovery seed? +
If you lose your recovery seed and your Trezor device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you will permanently lose access to your cryptocurrencies. There is no way to recover funds without the recovery seed. This is why it's critical to store your recovery seed securely in multiple physical locations.
Can I use Trezor with mobile devices? +
Yes, Trezor devices can be used with Android devices using a USB OTG cable. iOS support is more limited due to Apple's restrictions, but you can use Trezor with certain iOS apps that support hardware wallet integration. For the initial setup, we recommend using a computer.
What cryptocurrencies does Trezor support? +
Trezor supports over 1,000 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Zcash, and all ERC-20 tokens. The complete list of supported coins is available on the Trezor website and continues to grow with firmware updates.
How do I update my Trezor firmware? +
Firmware updates are performed through Trezor Suite. When an update is available, you'll see a notification in the application. Connect your device, follow the on-screen instructions, and do not disconnect during the update process. Always ensure you have your recovery seed backed up before updating.
What should I do if my Trezor is stolen? +
If your Trezor device is stolen, immediately use your recovery seed to restore your wallet on a new Trezor device or compatible software wallet. This will give you access to your funds while rendering the stolen device useless (protected by your PIN). After restoring, transfer your funds to new addresses for enhanced security.
